Picture 4-1

Drivers in their first 2 years of driving are more likely to be involved in a road
accident than after this period.

P plates (usually a white ‘P’ on a green background) are purely optional.
They are intended to indicate to drivers that the driver has passed their
driving test in the last couple of years. The idea of the ‘P’ plates was introduced
to encourage road safely and an awareness of the needs of new drivers. It is
hoped that other drivers will allow the new driver more space on the road and
be more patient when the new driver is manoeuvring.
