Manouvers: Turn in the road

Turn In the Road

Prepare the car by selecting first gear and finding the biting point. Then do good all round observation starting from looking over your left shoulder and finishing looking over your right shoulder. Do not signal, and if it is safe to proceed then remove the handbrake.

To move the car, gently raise and lower the clutch pedal around the biting point (moving the pedal no more than the thickness of a pound coin at a time) and as the car starts to move across the road quickly turn the steering wheel to full right lock. Do some more observations as you are moving across the road and be prepared to stop should a road user be in the area. As you are approaching the opposite kerb be ready to slow the car down and stop just before the front of the car reaches the kerb. If the road is narrow it may also help to take the steer back to straight just before you reach the kerb. Be careful though not to take the steer off too early as you will affect the angle of the car! Once the car has stopped, apply the handbrake and select neutral gear.

We now need to reverse the car back to the opposite side of the road. To do this, prepare the car by selecting reverse gear and find the biting point. Then do good all round observations from your right shoulder and finishing looking through the rear window. Do not signal, and if it is safe to proceed then remove the handbrake.

To move the car, gently raise and lower the clutch pedal around the biting point (moving the pedal no more than the thickness of a pound coin at a time) and as the car starts to move across the road quickly turn the steering wheel to full left lock. As you are reversing make sure you are looking through the rear window but as you are passing the halfway stage do some more observations up and down the road and be prepared to stop should a road user be in the area. As you are approaching the opposite kerb be ready to slow the car down and stop just before the back of the car reaches the kerb. Ideally the car should be facing the direction you want to move off in (a 12.30pm clock position). Again you may decide to take the steer back to straight just before you reach the kerb. Once the car has stopped, apply the handbrake and select neutral gear.

Hopefully you should have a good angle now to move away and to head off prepare the car by selecting first gear and finding the biting point. Then do good all round observation starting from looking over your left shoulder and finishing looking over your right shoulder. Do not signal, and if it is safe to proceed then remove the handbrake and using the clutch again move off, quickly steer to the right (possibly to right lock) and then once the car is positioned on the road correctly take the steer back to straight and move on.
