At the start of the driving test candidates are asked two questions, one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’. One or both questions answered incorrectly will result in one driving fault (i.e. minor fault) being recorded

At the start of the driving test candidates are asked two questions, one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’. One or both questions answered incorrectly will result in one driving fault (i.e. minor fault) being recorded. The questions that are used by the examiner are as follows:

Open the bonnet, identify:

  • Where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil?
  • Where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level?
  • Where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level? •Where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?

Tell me how you would check that the:

  • Brake lights are working on this car?
  • Brakes are working before starting a journey?
  • Tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road?
  • Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked?

Show me how you would check the:

  • Headlights & taillights are working?
  • Direction indicators are working?
  • Horn is working (off road only)?
  • Handbrake for excessive wear?
  • The power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?

The examiner will use one of the following 12 combinations, of the questions above, on the test.

Combination 1

  1. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working?
    Answer – Tell the examiner, Press the hazard warning light button and get out of the car and check that all the indicators are working
  2. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey?
    Answer – Tell the examiner that you would let your car roll forward and press the brake pedal, the Brake shouldn’t feel spongy or slack and the car shouldn’t pull to one side.

Combination 2

  1. Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level?
    Answer – Identify reservoir and explain, tell the examiner that you can’t check how much is in there so you need to fill the tank up weekly or fortnightly
  2. Show Me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car (I can assist you if necessary, you may switch on the ignition but DO NOT start the car)
    Answer – Turn the ignition on. Ask the examiner to stand at the back of the car, one they are there press and hold your foot on the brake pedal.

Combination 3

  1. Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?
    Answer. (DO NOT START CAR). Tell the examiner, when the car is switched off, try to move the stearing wheel, it should feel hard to move. When you start the car it should move easier
  2. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked?
    Answer – The tyre preasures can be found on the white lable in the drivers door sill, use a reliable pressure gauge and when the tyres are cold check all tyres including the spare putting the dust caps back on when you have finished.

Combination 4

  1. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear?
    Answer. Tell the examinere that you would drive to a road that was slightly down hill and put the handbrake on. The car should not move when the handbrake on and the handbrake should not come too far up
  2. Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level?
    Answer – Identify reservoir and explain, tell the examiner that you can’t check how much is in there so you need to fill the tank up weekly or fortnightly.

Combination 5

  1. Open the bonnet, identify where you wouls check the engine oil level and TELL me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil.
    Answer. Open the bonnet, point to the dipstick and say to the examiner, “to pull out the dipstick, wipe the end, place it back and take it out again and check that the oil level is between minimum and maximum.
  2. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked?
    Answer – The tyre pressure can be found on the white label in the Passenger side front door sill, use a reliable pressure gauge and when the tyres are cold check all tyres including the spare putting the dust caps back on when you have finished

Combination 6

  1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level?
    Answer. Point to the black cap with the thermometer on and tell the examiner that it should be half way between minimum and maximum.
  2. Tell me how you would make sure the head restraint is correctly adjusted so that it provides the best protection in the event of an accident.
    Answer – The bottom third of the head should be in line with the top of your ears

Combination 7

  1. Open the bonnet, identify where the Brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?
    Answer – Point to the yellow cap with the Hexagon contailing a small circle, Tell the examiner that it should be half way between minimum and maximum.
  2. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth that their general condition is safe to use on the road?
    Answer – No cuts and bulges. 1.6mm of tread depth across the central of the breath of the tyre and around the entire outer circumferences.

Combination 8

  1. Show me how you would check if the horn is working (off road only)?
    Answer – Press the horn in the centre of the stearing wheel
  2. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth that their general condition is safe to use on the road?
    Answer – No cuts and bulges. 1.6mm of tread depth across the central of the breath of the tyre and around the entire outer circumferences.

Combination 9

  1. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey?
    Answer – Tell the examiner that you would let your car roll forward and press the brake pedal, the Brake shouldn’t feel spongy or slack and the car shouldn’t pull to one side.
  2. Show me how you would clean the front windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers.
    Answer – With the ignition of the car at the 1st position, pull the windscreen wiper arm towards the steering wheel

Combination 10

  1. Tell me how you would check that the headlights & taillights are working?
    Answer – Turn the lights on , walk round vehicle and check they are all working
  2. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear windscreens.
    Answer – In front of the gear stick there are 4 buttons, press the 2 outer buttons until the orange lights come on.

Combination 11

  1. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights(s) and explain when you would need to use them.
    Answer – The rear fog lights are turned on by first putting the car front and back lights on, then twisting the inner tumbler on the indicator arm forward twice until the fog light symbol appears on the dashboard, they need to be switched on then visibility drops below 100m but turned off when visibility gets better
  2. Tell me how you would know that there was a problem with the Anti-Lock braking system.
    Answer – A red light should appear on the dashboard

Combination 12

  1. Show Me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car (I can assist you if necessary, you may switch on the ignition but DO NOT start the car)

  1. Show me how you would switch the headlights from dipped to full beam and tell me how you would know that to full beam is on from inside the car.
    Answer – with the car lights on, pull the indicator arm towards the steering wheel until the green headlight on the dashboard changes to blue
  2. Tell me how you would know that there was a problem with the Anti-Lock braking system.
    Answer – A red light should appear on the dashboard.
